The Miranda Leavitt Diabetes Fund was established in 2008 by Brenda and Richard Leavitt of Fryeburg, Maine, in honor of their daughter Miranda Maria Leavitt. Miranda, diagnosed at the age of 13 with Type 1 diabetes, passed away at the age of 22 from diabetes complications. Miranda left as her legacy her desire to help educate, assist and fund those who needed assistance managing their diabetes. Miranda's fund is administered by Memorial Hospital in North Conway, NH. The Diabetes Center at Memorial Hospital will provide education on health, wellness and healthy living for prevention of type 2 diabetes. The "Miranda Center for Diabetes" serves Carroll County and western Maine serving over 15,000 people by way of providing testing for diabetes, education in the schools and communities on prevention of Type 2 diabetes and more.
On February 17, 2007 Miranda Maria Leavitt passed away from complications with Diabetes. A year later, the communities in the Mt.Washington Valley of New Hampshire and Miranda's hometown friends and family in Fryeburg, Maine supported the efforts and started The Miranda Leavitt Diabetes Fund.
